Mystery played a part in a freak accident while death took its toll of one life at 4:45 a.m. Tuesday, four miles east of Borger on the Pampa highway. The fatally injured man was G.W. Stone, 20, of 400 Delaware street, Borger, who was apparently killed instantly, pinned behind the cab of the truck he was driving, when it struck another truck in front of him.
Three trucks were rolling toward Pampa at dawn this morning while snow had covered the countryside. A.A. Perkins, driver of the first truck, owned by the Chemical Process company of Borger, noticed a 1942 Buick two-door sedan parked in the middle of Dixon Creek bridge.
Perkins said, "When I first saw him, I tried to slow down and stop. I knew I couldn't pass him."
As Perkins attempted to halt his truckload of 1000 gallons of hydrochloric acid, Bill Brunker, driving another chemically loaded vehicle astern of Perkins, applied brakes and maneuvered to get out of the way. On the slippery road he said, "I couldn't stop and lost control of my car. I was already fixing to jump out," when the truck driven by Stone passed Brunker and hit into the right rear of Perkins vehicle, crushing its occupant.
When the vehicles came to a halt, the truck drivers investigated and with the occupant of the Buick attempted to extricate Stone. Realizing that there was nothing they could do they asked the driver of the Buick to remain. The two truck drivers then placed flares on the road to warn any approaching motorist. In the meantime, the driver of the Buick returned to his car and disappeared into the night. He did not explain why he parked his car in the middle of the bridge.
No one else was injured and there was no damage to any of the other vehicles. The accident is being investigated by sheriff Hugh Anderson.
The 20-year-old fatally injured truck driver, employed by Chemical Process, is survived by his mother and father, Mr. and Mrs. R.C. Stone, Borger; two brothers, Bob, Borger; and Allen, Albuquerque; two sisters, Mrs. Retha Bucker, Borger; and Mrs. C.M. Jones, Healdton, Oklahoma.
