PRIVATE 165th Depot Brigade 40th Company Travis Detachment 2
January 29, 1887 - February 5, 1918

Killed aboard the SS Tuscania
Private Guadalupe Garza, from Rio Grande, Texas, was son of Telesforo and Maria Garza, the husband of Otilla Garza and the father of ConcepciĆ³n Garza.
A private with the 165th Depot Brigade, 40th Company, Travis Detachment #2, Private Garza was with a large contingent of the American Expeditionary Force enroute to France aboard the HMS Tuscania, a liner pressed into service as a troop transport.
He never made it to France.
Late in the afternoon of February 5, 1918, Guadalupe lost his life as a result of a torpedo attack by the German submarine UB-77, off the coast of Scotland. Another 200 Americans died that night as well, including another 24 from Texas.
As with other victims of that tragedy, Pvt. Garza was first buried at Port Charlotte, Islay Isle, Scotland, and was later exhumed and returned to the US for permanent interment.
