Monroe Jackson Duke was born in 1845 to Brown Bedford and Mary Ann Duke. He is the brother of Zach Taylor Duke, Bedford, Sarah, Celia, Millard and Mary Duke.

On April 25, 1864, at the age of 18, Monroe enlisted out of Oxford, Mississippi into the service, classified as a PRIVATE. He was assigned to the Third Cavalry, C-L.

In 1875, he was married to Miss Julia Pennington in Fayette County, Texas.

Monroe married to Mary Louella "Mollie" Strahan in 1878 in Colorado County, Texas. They are the parents of Brown Bedford Duke, Roma Duke, Coria Duke,
Strahan Duke, Monroe Duke, Roy Duke and Elby Duke.

Mr. Duke died on May 15,1919 in Brazoria County, Texas at the age of 41.
