Funeral services were held Sunday for one of the pioneer residents of Wheeler County, Mrs. J.A. Callan, in the Methodist Church in Wheeler. Mrs. Callan passed away in the home of her son early Friday morning, January 1. Rev. Jim H. Sharp of Shamrock officiated at the services.

Eliza Tennesee McCuiston was born March 28, 1875, in Bosque County, Texas. She was married to J.A. Callan on August 8, 1893. To this union was born 11 children, 5 sons and 6 daughters.

Early in their married life she and her husband moved to Greer County, Oklahoma. And in 1906 they moved to Wheeler County and settled 13 miles east of the present site of Wheeler on Sweetwater Creek. Mrs. Callan lived there and in Wheeler for the remainder of her life.

She was a member of the Methodist Church and had been since 1910. She was extremely active in the church until her death. She was 84 years, 9 months and 3 days old at the time of her passing. Her husband, 2 brothers, 3 sisters and 1 grandson preceded her in death.

All of Mrs. Callan's children survive her. They are: Herbert Callan of Shamrock, Texas; Martin Callan of Wheeler, Texas; Mrs. Evalena Riley of Elkhart, Kansas; Mrs. Iva Barker of Shamrock, Texas; Elvoid Callan of Pampa, Texas; Buster Callan of Wheeler, Texas; Mrs. Vulla Goodwin of Dimmitt, Texas; Mrs. Exa Cox of Oklahoma City, Okla.; Clayton Callan of Pampa, Texas; and Mrs. Florine Liles of Wheeler, Texas.

Other survivors include four sisters: Mrs. Bertha Bryant, of El Cajon, California; Mrs. Lizzie Gibbons of Wheeler, Texas; Mrs. Oehmigan of Sacramento, California; Mrs. Louise Miller of Sweetwater, Okla.; and 18 grandchildren and 36 great grandchildren.

Interment was in the Wheeler Cemetery under the direction of Kirk Funeral Home.

Pall bearers were: J.E. Callan, Robert Callan, Randy Callan, Doyle Goodwin, Marvin Barker, and Leon Riley.

Named as honorary bearers were: H.W. Callan, Harold Callan, A.W. Fowler, Vancel Fowler.
