Hundreds of friends and relatives gathered at the First Baptist Church here Monday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock to pay a last loving tribute to the memory of Mrs. J.M. Herd who passed away at her home last Sunday morning. Rev. M.B. Smith was in charge and was assisted by B.M. Litton, minister of the Wheeler Church of Christ.

Mrs. J.M. Herd was born in Hancock County, Tenn., May 2, 1876 and passed away at her home east of Wheeler February 20, 1949 at the age of 72 years, 9 months and 18 days.

Survivors include: Four daughters, Mrs. Barbara Dearman of Glendale, Ariz., Mr. Mattie Hagett of Tahoka, Mrs. Ora Crowder of Wheeler and Miss Bessie Herd of Borger; three sons, Emmett, Hammy and Roy all of Wheeler. Four children, Walter, Charlie, Ernest and Ruby preceded her in death.

Surviving also are three step-children, who are: Mrs. Virta [sic] Anderson of Sweetwater, Okla., Mrs. Minnie Yarbrough of Texola, Okla., and Mrs. Clara Maxwell of Wheeler.

There are also 23 surviving grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren; one brother, Will Rice of Tennessee, and one sister, Mrs. Ann Arwood of Virginia. Two brothers and 3 sisters preceded her in death.

Active pall bearers were grandsons and included; Olen Maxwell, J.D. Herd, Wymon Herd, Johnny Yarbrough, Garnett Anderson and Furman Maxwell. Honorary pall bearers included: Clarence Crowder, Floyd Pennington, Harry Wofford, Early Willard, Lonnie Lee and J.H. Richards.

Flower attendants were granddaughters and included: Elsie Moore, Edith Owen, Stella Jenkins, Marie Hampton, Mary Ann Maxwell, Maurine Herd, Wanda Dearman, Pauline Ingle, Loretta Crowder and Georgia Gaye Herd.

Interment was in the Wheeler Cemetery beside the husband who passed away on August 20, 1939 with Kirk-Mason Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
