Tom M. Britt, 92, died Monday, July 11, 1988 in Ft. Worth, Texas, after a short illness, following surgery.

Services will be Thursday, July 14, 1988, at 10:30 A.M. in the First United Methodist Church of Wheeler, Rev. Carlton Thomson, District Superintendent of Seymour, Texas, and Rev. Weldon Rives, pastor, will officiate.

Mr. Britt was born in Childress, Texas, on August 13, 1895, to S.P. and Janet Britt, a pioneer Panhandle banking and ranching family. He moved with his family to the Britt Ranch, east of Wheeler in 1913. He operated the ranch with his father and brother for several years and later with his son David. The grandsons, David, Jr., and Lewis also joined the operation. He retired from ranching in 1974, but continued to live on the ranch.

On October 17, 1920, Mr. Britt was married to Vera Mary Barrett in Temple, Texas. To this union were born one son, David, and two daughters, Louise and Genevieve. Mrs. Britt preceded her husband in death on July 7, 1964 [sic].

Mr. Britt attended the University of Illinois, where he was a member of the Farmhouse Fraternity. He was a generous financial supporter of many educational institutions, including Southwestern University, McMurry College and Texas A&M.

Mr. Britt was a life long member of the Methodist Church and has been a very active worker and supporter of the church. He had been active in the local church and was also active on the district and conference levels.

Mr. Britt was a charter member of the Wheeler Kiwanis Club, served many years on the Wheeler County Draft board and also served many years as president of the Wheeler County School Board.

T.M. Britt is survived by his son, David, of Wheeler; two daughters, Louise Carvey of Ft. Worth and Genevieve Caldwell of Clarendon; six grandchildren; seven great grandchildren and numerous other relatives and friends.

Pallbearers will be David Britt, Jr., Lewis Britt, Sam Britt, Dr. Turner Caldwell, Douglas Carvey, Doug McLean, Ray Giddens and Glen Waldo.

Honorary pallbearers will be Charlie Brown, Richard Brown, Richard DeArment, Harrison Hall, Thomas Helton, Grainger McIlhany, Thurman Rives, Gordon Stiles, James Verden and N.D. Ware.

Burial will be in the Wheeler Cemetery under the direction of Wright Funeral Home.
