William Morgan Hampton, one of Wheeler's oldest pioneers, died at his home here in Wheeler last Saturday morning at the age of 90 years, 5 months and 24 days. Mr. Hampton had been in ill health for several months.

Mr. Hampton was truly one of Wheeler's pioneers since he came to Wheeler County in 1898 and helped to build the first business house in Shamrock and also dug the first well in Shamrock.

William Morgan Hampton was born in Jackson County, Alabama on December 5, 1857 in the log cabin where his mother was born. He came from Alabama to Ellis County when quite young. He was married in 1885 to Mary Jane Whitefield at Itasca, Texas. The family moved to Vernon, then to Wheeler in 1898.

Mr. Hampton was converted and joined the Methodist church at the age of 22 years.

Besides his loving wife, Mr. Hampton is survived by two sons, Chester of Wheeler, and Dewey of Allison, two daughters, Mrs. Maggie Rathfon of Chelsea, Okla., Mrs. Vera Galmor of Wheeler, 21 grandchildren, and 40 great grandchildren. Preceding him in death were two sons, William Edward and Charlie Ollie.

Funeral services were conducted from the Wheeler Methodist Church Sunday afternoon at 3:00 o'clock with R.M. Litton, minister of the Church of Christ in charge, assisted by Rev. A.C. Wood and Rev. M.B. Smith.

Interment was in the Wheeler Cemetery with Kirk-Mason Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Pall bearers were grandsons and included: Alvin Hampton, Wade Hampton, Donald Hampton, Gilbert Hampton, Virgil Jamison and Hensel Rathfon. Honorary pall bearers were: O. Nations, Frank Rogers, A.N. Walser, Rex Miller, Doner Reid, Rick Guynes, Walter Anglin and T.J. Daughtry.

Flower bearers were granddaughters of Mr. Hampton and included: Mrs. Wade Hampton, Mrs. Gilbert Hampton, Mrs. Alvin Hampton, Mrs. Grover Hampton, Mrs. Donald Hampton, Mrs. Enos Morgan, Mrs. Nathan Miller, Mrs. Virgil Jamison, Mrs. Hensel Rathfon and Mrs. Bill Bricky.

Funeral Services were held Wednesday in the Methidist [sic] Church for a pioneer resident of Wheeler County.

Mary Jane Whitefield [sic] was born near Rawleigh [sic], North Carolina on July 25, 1868. She later resided in Grimes and Ellis County Texas and moved to Wheeler County in 1898 after marrying W.M. Hampton in 1887.

When the Hamptons first came to Wheeler County the settled on a farm 2 miles south of Wheeler. At that time the closest town was Mobeetie. Many of the old timers recall how Mrs. Hampton would ride horseback to Mobeetie for the community mail and how she thought nothing of riding 8 or 9 miles to help a sick friend.

Records indicate that she was one of the last living charter members of the Methodist Church here in Wheeler.

Mrs. Hampton had been in ill health for the past year. She passed away at the home of her son, Monday, December 7 at the age of 91 years, 4 months and 12 days.

Services were held at 3:00 P.M. in the Methodist Church with the Rev. Carroll Jones officiating.

Survivors include the children: Mrs. Maggie Rathfon of Chelsea, Okla.; Chester Hampton, Wheeler; Mrs. Vera Galmor, Wheeler; 21 grandchildren, 61 great grandchildren, and 2 brothers George and Albert, both of Plainview, Texas.

Also surviving is Effie Bailey, Temple, Texas, a sister.

3 sons, 2 brothers, 3 sisters and her husband preceded her in death.

Those serving as pall bearers were: Bill Hampton, Wade Hampton, J.L. Hampton, Gilbert Hampton, Charles Hampton and Virgil Jamison.

Interment was in the Wheeler Cemetary [sic] under the direction of the Kirk Funeral Home.
