Billy Don Helton, 74, died peacefully in his home on Monday, August 26, 2013.

Bill was born September 6, 1938 to Thomas and Alice Bell Helton in Briscoe, Tx. Bill was the fourth of five children living on the family farm.

He married Phyllis K. Richerson August 9, 1957.

Bill started his career with Southwestern Public Service (SPS) as a Line Serviceman in Pampa, Tx. Bill moved to Lubbock, Tx to attend Texas Tech and graduated with a Bachelors Degree in Electrical Engineering. After college, with three young children, Bill went back to work for SPS. Over a 43 year career with SPS, Bill progressed through the company serving in many areas of the company, finally to become the CEO of SPS, then the CEO of New Century Energies. Bill loved working for the utility and even more loved all the people he had the privilege to work with.

Bill's second career after retirement was ranching. Bill owned two different ranches over a 14 year period in the Groom area. He was thrilled to return to his agricultural roots after retiring from the utility business. He enjoyed going to work every day of his life, be it as a lineman, executive, or a rancher.

Bill is survived by his wife Phyllis of 55 years; Sister Joyce Smith of Sayer, Ok.; Brothers Bob from Marble Falls, Thomas and Jack from Wheeler, Tx. He is also survived by his three children, Kim Henderson and husband Kim Wade of Amarillo, Cindy Collinsworth and husband Rick of Amarillo, Jeff Helton and wife Brandy of San Angelo, Tx. Bill had eleven grandchildren and three great grand children. Bill was a rich resource of wisdom, experience, love, and joy. He was a lover of Jesus in this life, and thrilled to be with Him forevermore. Bill will be missed by all. Bill was a member of Kingswood Methodist Church for 45 years.

The funeral will be held in Amarillo at Polk St. Methodist Church on Thursday August 29th at 11:00 am with Rev. Brad Reeves officiating. The graveside service will be in the Wheeler County Cemetery at 3:00 pm on the 29th.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
