WHEELER - Maxey E. Herd, 68, died Wednesday, April 28, 2004, in Amarillo.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in First Baptist Church with Dr. Toby Henson, former pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Wheeler Cemetery by Wright Funeral Home.

Mr. Herd was born Dec. 13, 1935, in Wheeler to Hammy H. and Gladys Criner Herd. He attended Wheeler schools and graduated from Wheeler High School in 1954. He married Wanda Sue Waters on April 15, 1957, in Amarillo.

He joined the Air Force after high school and retired in 1975. He attended Yale University during his service time and served in the Far East and San Angelo. He moved back to Wheeler in 1983 to open and operate Maxey's Steakhouse. He was a member of First Baptist Church and American Legion.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers; and a grandson, Nathan Sauer.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Jeff Herd of Wheeler and Phil Herd and wife, Marilyn, of Georgetown; a daughter, Tina Sauer and husband, Eddy, of Amarillo; a brother, Waymon Herd of Fort Worth; and eight grandchildren, Jenna Herd, Tyler Herd, Maray Herd, Kaysha Herd, Donelle Sauer, Valerie Sauer, Michelle Sauer and Angela Sauer.

The family suggests memorials be to a favorite charity.
