Stephen Arthur Maxwell was born in Mississippi on December 17, 1887, and passed away at his home at Wheeler, May 4, 1957, at 4:30 p.m. at the age of 69 years, four months and seventeen days.

Mr. and Mrs. Maxwell were married November 21, 1909, and had resided in this community for 42 years. They came from Denton County to Wheeler County. He was a farmer and still lived on the farm east of Wheeler. He was a member of the Baptist Church.

Funeral services were held Monday, May 6, 1957, in the Baptist Church at 3:00 p.m. with Rev. M.B. Smith of Pampa officiating. Interment was in the Wheeler Cemetery, under direction of Kirk Funeral Home.

Honorary pallbearers included Chester Hampton, Frank Hyatt, Roy Weatherly, Earl Willard, Arthur Whitener, Olen Pendleton, Clifford Mason and S.D. Conwell.

Serving as pallbearers were: Bill Hampton, Dorsie Hutchison, Hershel Anderson, J.D. Herd, Waymon Herd and Ocie Ford.

Survivors are the widow Mrs. Clara Maxwell of Wheeler; the children, Elmer Maxwell of Ervin Calif.; Mrs. Lola Shira of Wheeler; Olen Maxwell of Phillips; Mrs. Inetta Hyatt of Borger; and Furman Ray Maxwell of Borger.

Also surviving are four grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. One brother, Clarence Maxwell of Denton; and six sisters: Mrs. L.A. Morgan; Mrs. Nathan Solomon; Mrs. Lexie Watson; Mrs. E. Massey; and Viola Maxwell all of Denton; and Mrs. L.W. Sams of Ft. Worth.

Two children, one sister and one brother preceded him in death.

Mrs. Clara Maxwell, 79, of Rt. 1, Wheeler, died Sunday, February 21 after several weeks illness. She was born in Tennessee August 14, 1891.

Mrs. Maxwell had lived in Wheeler County since 1914. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Wheeler.

Survivors include 2 daughters, Mrs. Elwood Shira of Wheeler and Mrs. T.J. Hyatt of Borger, 3 sons, Elmer Maxwell of Porum, Oklahoma, Olen L. of Phillips and Furman R. of Borger 1 brother, H.H. Herd of Wheeler, 3 sisters, Mrs. H.O. Harget of Tahoka, Texas and Mrs. Lawrence Crowder and Miss Bessie Herd of Wheeler, 6 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1957.

Services will be Thursday, February 25 at 2:30 p.m. in the First Baptist Church in Wheeler. Rev. M.B. Smith of Pampa will officiate with Rev. Keith McCormick assisting.

Pall bearers will be J.D. Herd, C.B. Brotherton, Jr., L.E. Brain, Dorsey Hutchison, Bill Hampton and Hershel Anderson.

Burial will be in Wheeler Cemetery under the direction of Wright Funeral Home.
