WHEELER - Billie Vida Brown McClellan, 75, died Sunday, July 22, 2007, in Gatesville.

Graveside services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in Wheeler Cemetery with the Rev. Tom Woodward, pastor First United Methodist Church, officiating. Arrangements are by Wright Funeral Home, Wheeler.

Billie was born Sept. 26, 1931, in Canadian to R. William and Vida Brown. She graduated from Wheeler High School, from Texas Christian University with a bachelor degree, and from Western Michigan University with a masters degree in counseling. She taught high school English and speech in McLean, Samnorwood, and Stanton. She did counseling and taught in Gatesville and Giddings, Texas Youth Commissions Schools.

She established scholarships at TCU and WTA&M. She also aided many youth individually to attend various colleges. She served on the Volunteer Service Council at Brenham State School and as an advocate for clients that had no available families.

In 1986, she received the Governors award for Outstanding State Volunteer for Mental Health and Retardation.

The stained glass window in the chapel of Brenham State School is in her honor. She was a member of the First Methodist Church in Brenham.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Survivors include a brother, Richard S. Brown and wife Anita of Wheeler; a nephew, Rich and wife Lou and children Cole, Lauren, and Rachel; a niece, Beth Helton and husband Dale and children John, Sam, and Mary.

The family suggests memorials be to Brenham State School or First United Methodist Church of Wheeler.
