Death Takes One of Area's First Settlers
The Wellington Leader - Bert McCracken, who as a young boy came to this area 75 years ago, while Indians were still familiar figures and the whole area was unbroken grassland, died in Smith Rest Home early Monday, Jan. 23. He was 81 years of age.
Mr. McCracken was born Jan. 28, 1879, in Montague county, and when he was only seven, in 1886, his parents, the late A. J. and Elizabeth Beck McCracken, settled along Elm Creek, where most of the few permanent settlers were located.
He grew up there, then in 1902 he moved to a new ranching frontier in Montana where he entered the livestock business. During the 60 years that followed he divided his time between that state and Collingsworth county. He had been here four years this last time.
Funeral services for Mr. McCracken were conducted in Kelso Chapel Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. by the Rev. Glenn Hickey of First Baptist Church. Burial was in the Wheeler cemetery by the side of a son who died a number of years ago, with Kelso Funeral Home in charge.
Mr. McCracken is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Viola Ronish of Denton, Mont. Several nieces and nephews also survive, with Mrs. Guy Clements as the only one living here.
