Hundreds of friends and relatives gathered in the Methodist church of Wheeler Thursday afternoon to hear the last rites spoken for Tom Patten Morton of that city, who passed away at a Wheeler hospital Wednesday. The Rev. Edmund Kirby was in charge of the services.

Morton was born in Fannin county February 18, 1869, being 64 years, 6 months and 5 days of age at the time of his death. He was married to Martha Ann Gribble 40 years ago. They lived near Fort Worth for a while, moving from there to Fannin county. From Fannin county they moved to Wheeler county 31 years ago and settled near Mobeetie. They moved to Wheeler some 26 years ago, and it is said that he was the oldest resident of that city.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Martha Ann Morton, two daughters, Mrs. P.L. Ussery and Mrs. B.P. Benham of Oklahoma City, Okla., two sons-in-law, two grandchildren, Billie Fern and Betty Jo Ussery, and one brother, Jim Morton of Bridgeport.

*Obituary Martha
Mrs. T.P. Morton, well known and beloved pioneer, passed away at the home of a daughter, Mrs. B.P. Benham, in Oklahoma City, Monday afternoon, April 17. She had been in failing health for some time.

Miss Martha Hellam was born December 28, 1872, at Nashville, Tenn., and would have been seventy-years-old her next birthday.

On December 4, 1892, she was married to T.P. Morton and to this union three daughters were born, the husband and one daughter preceding her in death.

The deceased, who enjoyed a wide acquaintance, came to Wheeler with her hamily [sic] about 37 years ago, where Mr. Morton was engaged in the blacksmith trade. She was a devoted christian, of splendid character, who friends deemed it a real privilege to know and love. She joined the church at the age of 13 years.

Mrs. Morton is survived by two daughters, Mrs. B.P. Benham and Mrs. P.L. Ussery; two granddaughters, Betty Joe Ussery and Mrs. W.M. Blazer; one great grandson, Kenneth Dale Blazer, all of Oklahome [sic] City; one half sister, Mrs. G.L. Brazil, Fresno, Calif., and a cousin, Mrs. Ed Walser of Canadian and a host of friends.

Funeral services were conducted at the Methodist church here Wednesday afternoon at 2:00 by Rev. J. Edmund Kirby, her former pastor, now of Wellington, and Rev. Wayne Cook, pastor of the church.

Pall bearers were Amos May, H.H. Walser, Chas. Sandifer, Tony Puckett, Sid Andrews and Fred Farmer.

Interment was made in the Wheeler Cemetery under the direction of the Hunt Funeral Home.
