Services were held Wednesday, September 15 for one of Wheeler's most beloved citizens, Dr. H.E. "Nick" Nicholson, Sr., M.D. Dr. Nicholson died September 13, 1965 in Shamrock hospital after an illness of three months.

Dr. Harold Earl Nicholson, Sr. was born at Valley Head, Alabama Feb. 7, 1889. He was the son of Mr. Edmund P. Nicholson and Mary Larmer Nicholson. He married Dorothy Annette Newburn in 1916 at Searcy, Ark.

Dr. Nicholson, 76, was recently honored in San Antonio at the American Medical Association Meeting for 50 years of practice. A graduate of Baylor University School of Medicine, Dr. "Nick" began his practice in Arkansas as a Plantation doctor.

He served as a Medical Officer Chaplain in World War I.

He moved to Mobeetie in 1916 and set up a practice. He practiced in Shamrock one year and moved to Wheeler in 1920 where he maintained his practice until three months ago.

The first hospital to be built in Wheeler was built by Dr. Nicholson. This hospital was operated by Dr. Nicholson until 1961. When health permitted he maintained an office at the hospital, March of this year remodeled the building and opened the Harold E. Nicholson, Jr. M.D. Medical Clinic.

Active in civic affairs, Dr. Nicholson served on the Wheeler School Board for several years and was a member of the American Legion and the 40 et 8. He was a member of the Wheeler Methodist Church for which he served as Sunday School Superintendent for 40 years.

He was a shriner and had served as deputy grand master of the Masonic Lodge for the Panhandle area. He was also a member of American Medical Association and other medical associations. Several years were served by Dr. Nicholson as county Health officer. He was director of the Farmers and Merchants Bank of Shamrock at one time.

Many honors have been bestowed Dr. Nicholson during his many years of service. He was an honorary member of Texas A&M Ex-Student Assoc'n. The local football field, Nicholson Field, is named for him and most recently the 1964-65 Wheeler School annual was dedicated to him. He did not know of the annual dedication as the annuals did not arrive until Tuesday after his death on Monday.

Services were held at the First Methodist Church on Wednesday Sept. 15 at 10:00 a.m. Rev. Harold Perdue pastor officiated. Dr. J. Edmund Kirley [sic] of Lubbock assisted.

Dr. Nicholsons wife died in December of 1964. His only son, "Dr. Harold" died five years ago.

Survivors include one grandson. H.E. Nicholson III of Topeka, Kan.; Mrs. Frank Wofford of Shamrock, A.O. Nicholson of Shamrock, Nephew; Mrs. J.W. Shull of Russellville, Ark., neice [sic]; Mrs. Walter Mooreland of Yelm, Wahsington [sic], neice [sic] and other neices [sic] and newphews [sic].

Burial was in the Wheeler Cemetery under the direction of Wright-Denson Funeral Home.
