WHEELER - Lt. Col. (Ret.) Joe D. Rogers, 76, died Sunday, Aug. 30, 1998.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Rob Lindley, pastor, and Judge Grainger McIlhaney officiating. Burial will be in Wheeler Cemetery with a military honor guard provided by Altus Air Force Base. Arrangements are by Wright Funeral Home.

Mr. Rogers was born in Flagstaff, Ariz. He attended school in Vigo Park and graduated from Tulia High School in 1939. In 1940 he joined the Army Air Corps, serving six years in Europe.

A C-47 pilot, Mr. Rogers flew with the 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions. He was awarded three Bronze Battle Stars, seven Air Medals, a Pre-Pearl Harbor Medal and seven Presidential Unit Citations. He was a Caterpillar Club member. After discharge from active duty, he remained in the Air Force Reserves, retiring in 1981 after 41 years of service.

In 1948 Mr. Rogers moved from Amarillo to Wheeler, where he was employed by Nash Appliance for four years and by the First National Bank for 25 years. He served for 10 years as bailiff for Judge McIlhaney with the 31st District Court. He was Wheeler County Democratic Chairman for 10 years. For 24 years he served with the Wheeler Volunteer Fire Department. He was a member of First United Methodist Church.

He married Vera M. McNeil in 1942 at Austin. He was preceded in death by a son, Neil Weston Rogers, in 1979.

Survivors include his wife; twin sons, Dean Rogers of St. Paul, Minn., and Dale Rogers of Thomas, Okla.; a daughter, Jo Rita Henard of Wellington; 11 grandchildren; and a great-grandson.

The family requests memorials be to Wheeler Volunteer Fire Department or Wheeler Ambulance Service.
