*Obituary
Peder Jensen Sorensen, pioneer resident of the community and citizen of this county since 1908, passed away suddenly at his farm home three miles northwest of Wheeler last Thursday morning. Death was ascribed to infirmities incident to advanced age.

Of Danish nationality, Sorensen was born at Hjorring, Denmark, Sept. 17, 1857, and died at Wheeler, Texas, March 12, 1942, at the age of 84 years, five months and 23 days.

He was baptized in October, 1863, and confirmed in the Lutheran church in October, 1871.

Sorensen came to America in 1880, first locating at Gainesville in this state. In 1883, Nikoline Neilson, also a native of Hijorring [sic], Denmark, joined her future husband in this country and they were married at Gainesville. Shortly afterward they settled at Hope, Okla., and lived there until the Indian Territory was opened for settlement.

The family then moved to Yukon, Okla., where they lived until 1908. In that year they moved to Wheeler, where he made his home until the time of his death. Mrs. Sorensen preceded him in death by three years and two months. Also passing away before him were a daughter, Signa, and a son, Tillman.

Immediate survivors are three sons and three daughters. They are: Soren Holt Sorensen, Quanah, and Edison and Walter Sorensen, Wheeler; Mrs. Loyd Echols, Megargel; Miss Esther Sorensen, Lubbock, and Miss Mina Sorensen, Wheeler. Also several grandchildren and a host of friends who mourn his passing.

P.J. Sorensen was an industrious and highly respected citizen, a hardy and resourceful pioneer who contributed his part toward developing a new country from which he wrested a living and accumulated a modest competence. His greatest heritage are the noble sons and daughters who by precept and training are prepared to carry on the traditions of a worthy family.

Funeral services were conducted Friday afternoon from the Methodist church by Rev. A.C. Wood, assisted by Rev. Wayne Cook, pastor, and Murray Fuquay, Baptist minister.

Those assisting with the flowers were Mrs. Buck Britt, Mrs. Joe Hyatt, Miss Beth Stiles, Wheeler, and Mrs. Jim Caperton, Shamrock.

Pall bearers were A.R. Meek, Matt Rowe, Chester Morgan, Perry Riley, J.R. Austin and Bob Greenhouse.

Interment was made in the Wheeler cemetery under direction of the Hunt Funeral Home.
