Rites Held For County Pioneer
Funeral services for Mrs. J.A. Spikes, member of a prominent pioneer Wheeler County family, were held at 3 o'clock Friday afternoon in Richerson Chapel with Rev. Jim H. Sharp, pastor of the First Methodist Church, officiating.
Mrs. Spikes, 77, passed away in Shamrock General Hospital at 7:45 o'clock, Wednesday, June 6.
Following the services here the body was taken overland by Richerson Funeral Home and interment was in Wheeler Cemetery.
Pallbearers were: Alvis Reeves and George L. Stanley, both of Shamrock; Harry Wofford, Gordon Stiles, A.B. Crump and Dick Guynes, all of Wheeler.
Mrs. Spikes, the former Frances Reynolds was born in Mississippi on September 2, 1878, and came to Wheeler County with her parents. in 1906. Her father, the late Judge J.B. Reynolds, was the first lawyer to establish practice in Wheeler.
She was a school teacher during her early life and later served as county treasurer of Wheeler County.
In 1911, she was married to J.A. Spikes, who was then superintendent of Wheeler Schools. They moved to Springfield, Colo., where they resided for a few years, and during the time, Mrs. Spikes served one term as mayor of that city. They later moved to Arkansas, and came to Shamrock in 1948.
Mrs. Spikes was a member of the Methodist Church. She was a talented artist.
Surviving are: the widower and a sister, Miss Agnes Reynolds, both of Shamrock; and two brothers, M. Reynolds of Shamrock and Arlington, and Dennis G. Reynolds of Guymon, Okla.
