Friends and acquaintances of the family not only in Wheeler county but practically the entire Panhandle were shocked to learn that Mrs. W.G. Stiles passed away Sunday evening, Sept. 15, at her home east of Wheeler after a severe attack of pneumonia that lasted only five days.

Mrs. Stiles can truly be called a pioneer of Wheeler, the family moving here in 1901 from Golindo, in what is now McLennan county, Texas, near where she was born. Mr. and Mrs. Stiles settled on the ranch east of this city a year later. That has since been their home.

Lizzie Bowles [sic] was born at Golindo, Texas, Sept. 17, 1870, and died Sept. 15, 1935 at Wheeler, Texas at the age of 64 years, 11 months and 28 days. She married William Gordon Stiles at Big Springs, Texas, Oct. 9, 1893. To this union were born five children: Delcina, who died in 1902; Mrs. Elise (Stiles) Walker, Gordon, Beth and Robert Stiles.

Other survivors besides her faithful husband and loving children are one granddaughter, Patricia Ann Stiles; a sister and brother, Mrs. S.A. Monroe and Robert Preston, both of Roswell, N. Mex., and a host of friends and other relatives.

Funeral services were conducted from the Methodist church at 3:30 Monday afternoon, with Rev. J. Edmund Kirby in charge, assisted by Rev. A.C. Wood. A choir led by Mrs. Tom Britt sang "Rock of Ages," "Nearer My God to Thee" and "The Old Rugged Cross." Miss Lillian Wood of Dumas sang "Abide With Me." Flower girls were Mesdames Buck Britt, Don Fisher, Al Watson, Roe Green and Misses Reba Wofford, Clara Finsterwald, Gladys Gunter and Samanthy Stanley.

Pall bearers were E.M. Scott, Amarillo; Tom Britt, C.O. McCrohan, Buck Britt, Deward Wofford and F.B. Craig.

Interment was made in the Wheeler cemetery under direction of the Wheeler Funeral Home.

A Tribute by a Friend:
Friend, Wife, Mother! Could there be another three words that would better describe a noble woman than these in their deepest sense? The wisest man said, "A friend loveth at all times" and he also said, "Who so findeth a wife findeth a good thing." God said it was not good for man to live alone and created for him an helpmeet, a wife, to love as his own body. Someone, in the long ago, said, "God could not be everywhere, therefore He made mothers," Be that as it may, we know a real mother, more nearly than anything else, portrays the attributes of God in changeless, unselfish love, understanding and forgiveness.

It is not extravagant praise to say these statements describe Mrs. Stiles, for those who had known her for more than 20 years had found her always the same: a friend who never changed nor failed those depending on her.

Many the burden she carried that was hot hers for young and old; neighbor, stranger, favored or unfortunate found her sympathetic and helpful. Truly "the heart of her husband did safely trust in her" and "she did him good and not evil all the days of her life" and "her children rise up and call her blessed."

Her home was a haven to every wayfarer and her acquaintance was wide, although she was too busy being hostess to the many friends who found pleasure and relaxation in visiting in her home to go out and take active part in church and club affairs as most women do. Not being privileged to attend the Missionary society, she belonged and contributed liberally to the Gibson Home department of that organization.

Words fail us to say what we would like to in appreciation of her but one of Edgar A. Guest's poems does it beautifully and we believe it also expresses her life's desire:

Let me when trouble is mine to portray
Dip with good courage, my brush in the gray.
And after the tears and the grief let there be,
Something of faith for my children to see.
Lord, let me paint not in anger or hate,
But grant me the patience to work and to wait.
Make me an artist, though humble my style,
And let my life's canvas show something worth while.
