WHEELER- Armando Velasquez, 63, died Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2003.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in St. Maryís Catholic Church with the Rev. David Contreras officiating. Burial will be in Wheeler Cemetery by Wright Funeral Home.

Mr. Velasquez was born on the Asadon Ranch in Willacy County on June 4, 1940, to Felipe and Alicia Guerra Velasquez. He moved with his family to Wheeler in 1963.

He began playing music at a very young age and was involved in the music industry for most of his life. He played music with his brothers ìThe Velasquez Brothersî later known as ìThe Motifsî in Wheeler and the surrounding areas for many years.

After playing with "The Motifs" in Nevada for several years, he went on his own, playing music in top rooms in Las Vegas, Reno and Lake Tahoe. He played and opened shows for artists such as Freddy Fender, Grandpa Jones, The Hagar Twins, Hank Thompson, Merle Haggard, Wayne Newton, Willie Nelson and many others.

He showcased his talents as far north as Canada and Alaska as well as over most of the northwestern United States.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include a son, Capt. Armando Ray Kuppinger of Fort Eustis, Va.; a sister, Alice Mendoza of Rio Rancho, N.M.; six brothers, Willie Velasquez of Harlingen, Johnny Velasquez and Fred Velasquez, both of Wheeler, Felipe Velasquez and Albert Velasquez, both of Reno, Nev., and Jimmy Velasquez of Gardnerville, Nev.; and many nieces and nephews.

The family suggests memorials be to the American Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 50433, Amarillo, TX 79159.
