WHEELER - Hiram Arthur Whitener, 78, died Monday, Dec. 16, 2002, in Tyler.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in First Baptist Church with Dr. Toby Henson, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Wheeler Cemetery by Wright Funeral Home.

Mr. Whitener was born Aug. 5, 1924, to C.A. and Altha Mae Whitener in Wheeler. He was a lifelong resident of Wheeler. He married Mary Elizabeth Barnes on June 20, 1969, in Amarillo.

Mr. Whitener served in the Army Air Corps during World War II and was a retired postmaster in the post office in Wheeler. He was a member of American Legion, Masonic Lodge and First Baptist Church of Wheeler. He was a very gentle man with a loving heart and will be missed dearly by those who knew him.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Gordon Whitener and Herman Whitener; and two sisters, Novella Vanpool and Dealva Rhine.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Jamie Whitener and wife, Helen, of Pueblo, Colo.; a daughter, Judy Keylon and husband, Jerry, of Richardson; two step-daughters, Sherry Mickler and husband, Terry, of Jacksonville and Gwen McCain and husband, Bob, of Wheeler; a brother, Herbert Whitener of Tyler; a sister, Louise Whitener Plowman of Garland; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

The family suggests memorials be to First Baptist Church of Wheeler.
