HEREFORD - Patty Atchley, 83, died Tuesday, July 21, 2009.
Graveside services will be at 9:30 a.m. Friday in West Park Cemetery by Parkside Chapel Funeral Home. Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Friday in Hereford Central Church of Christ with Jared Blankenship and John Henley officiating.
Mrs. Atchley was born Sept. 24, 1925, in Dodge City, Kan., the daughter of Percy "Pat" Riley and Alice Ione Tabitha Woolwine. She attended school in Dodge City and graduated from Dodge City High School in 1944. Patty met Thurman Atchley at a church social while he was stationed at the Dodge City Airfield. They were married on Aug. 31, 1946, and moved to the Atchley farm in Deaf Smith County. In 1996, Patty moved from the family farm into Hereford.
Patty was a member of Hereford Central Church of Christ, a member of the Sugar Ant Quilters at the Hereford Senior Center until a stroke left her visually impaired, a former Deaf Smith County 4-H leader, and a member of Summerfield Study Club and Home Extension Club. Mrs. Atchley learned to sew and embroider at the age of 10. Her interests included quilting at the Hereford Senior Center and at home. She loved to embroider and to work in her flower beds of day lilies, roses and bluebonnets.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Thurman, in September 1992; her parents; and two sisters.
Survivors include four children, Ann Perry and husband Ron of Cedaredge, Colo., Sue Powell and husband Arnold of Summerfield, Dr. Charles Atchley and wife Sue of Canyon and Kay Stephens and husband Larry of Pampa; a brother, Charles F. Riley and wife Pauline of Dodge City, Kan.; a sister-in-law, Ruth Marceau of San Antonio; 10 grandchildren, Cody Powell of Summerfield, Kristi Culpepper, Scott Atchley, Julie Bednorz, Mikel Atchley and Mekesha Heitt, all of Amarillo, Chileen Eze of Grand Junction, Colo., Phillip Perry of Bethel, Alaska, Adam Stephens of Austin and Lori Stephens of Lubbock; 14 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family suggests memorials be to Hereford Senior Center, 426 Ranger St., Hereford, TX 79045; Jim Marsh Memorial Scholarship Fund, in care of Deaf Smith County Extension Office, P.O. Box 953, Hereford, TX 79045: of Central Church of Christ, 148 Sunset St., Hereford, TX 79045.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
