Services for Lela Buchanan, 101, of Midland and formerly of Lamesa, will be held on Friday, January 18, 2013, at 2 p.m. at Second Baptist Church with Brother Clifton Igo and Rush Coffman officiating. Burial will follow in Lamesa Memorial Park under the direction of Branon Funeral Home. Visitation will be held from 6-7 p.m. on Thursday, January 17, 2013,
at Branon Funeral Home.
Lela passed away on Tuesday, January 15, 2013, in Midland, TX. She was born on September 14, 1921 to Kirb and Katie (Low) Stephens. She moved to Dawson County in 1921. She married Herman Buchanan (H.L.) on December 12, 1937, in Lamesa, TX.
Lela was a longtime member of Second Baptist Church of Lamesa. She and Herman lived and farmed in the Hancock community until Herman passed away on January 15, 1968. Lela continued to live on the farm for about two more years and then moved in to Lamesa.
She loved to crochet and made many pot holders, afghans and lap throws. She moved to Midland in 2001 when she could no longer drive because of poor eyesight. In 2008 she moved in to Manor Park Nursing Home where she continued to crochet pot holders.
Lela is survived by one son, Kenneth Buchanan and wife Glee of Midland; a grandson, Kris Buchanan and wife Carlene of Stanton, TX; a granddaughter , Sheryl Spinks and husband Tracey of Stanton, TX; five great grandchildren, Courtney Jordan and husband Matt of Midland, TX, Casey Buchanan of Stanton, TX, Taylor Spinks, Kali Spinks and Kenzi Spinks all of Stanton, TX.
She was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers, Wilmer Stephens, Lois Stephens, Bert Stephens and Lonnie (Jiggs) Stephens; and one sister, Juanita (Neat) Nelson.
