Funeral services for Alton Carter, 96, of Lamesa will be held Thursday, February 1, 2018 at 10:30 a.m. at Northside Baptist Church with Pastor Dee Woolam officiating and assisted by Marvin Hale. Interment will follow in Dawson County Cemetery with Taps played by Sam Hale. Arrangements under the direction of Branon Funeral Home. Visitation will be held Thursday, February 1, 2018 from 9:30 a.m. until service time at Northside Baptist Church.


Alton passed away Monday, January 29, 2018 in Lamesa. He was born November 22, 1921 in Coleman County, Texas to Samuel C. and Mary Jane Hamiter (Carter). He married Lorene James August 14, 1946 in Lamesa. They were married 71 years. Alton was the last survivor of 12 children. He served in the United States Army from July of 1942 until December of 1945. He was a Rifle Sharpshooter and earned an American Theater Campaign Medal, an EAME Campaign Medal with 4 Bronze Star, 1 Bronze Arrowhead Good Conduct Medal Victory Ribbon, 1 Service Stripe, and 4 Overseas Bars. Alton was a retired farmer having farmed in Dawson County. After his retirement he continued working until he was 93 years old. He was a mechanic at Steve's Auto Clinic, and was later self employed and worked in grounds and maintenance for Lamesa Housing. He loved serving the Lord and was a member and deacon at Northside Baptist Church for 64 years.


Alton is survived by his wife, Lorene Carter of Lamesa; children, Keith Carter and wife, Alene, Vickie Leatherwood and husband, Dennis all of Lamesa, Dedra Wood and husband, Kent of Lubbock, and Janice Montgomery and husband, Randy of Coahoma; 10 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents; 4 sisters; and 7 brothers. 1 Corinthians 2:9 But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.
