Graveside services for Mamie Ferguson, 99, of Lamesa will be held Monday, March 2, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. at Lamesa Memorial Park with Wayne Smith and Dennis Adams officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Branon Funeral Home in Lamesa. Visitation will be held Sunday, March 1, 2015 from 3:00-4:00 p.m. at Branon Funeral Home. Mamie passed away Wednesday, February 25, 2015 in Lamesa. She was born July 28, 1915 in Coleman County, Texas to Jim and Ruth (Conder) Brown. She married Doylee Ferguson May 25, 1932 in the Sparenberg Methodist parsonage. They farmed the land in that area until his death June 18, 1973. They were married 41 years. When Mamie was 4 months old the Brown family loaded their furniture, two wagons, and one row planter, a cultivator, a saddle horse and four mules on a train that went to Slaton. Arriving there the next day in the freezing rain they loaded their belongings on the two wagons, hooked up the mules and continued their journey to Five Mile. Mamie walked to school most of the time and one day in 1923 by closing time the sand was so thick they could not see to go home. Mr. Land had them hold on to a long jump rope and he followed a fence to his house. By midnight that night the sand had cleared and her dad came for her by horseback. Her great-grandson, Chad Montgomery was her caregiver for the past 7 years. Mamie is survived by her daughter, Shirley Lasater of Lamesa; daughter-in-law, Nancy Ferguson of Lamesa; sister, Jackie Doering of Blanket; grandchildren, Dawna Montgomery and husband, Bob of Lamesa, Dave Lasater of Lamesa, Rondy Ferguson and wife, Sharalyn of Klondike, Kenny Ferguson and wife, Davette of Klondike; and Lonny Ferguson and wife, Amber of Lamesa; 13 great-grandchildren; and 8 great-great grandchildren. She is also preceded in death by her parents; son, Doy Ferguson; sisters, Dorothy Newman, and Evelyn Graham; and brothers, J.B. Brown, Garland Brown, Leldon Brown, and Audry Brown. The family suggests memorials to Medical Arts Home Hospice, 1512 N. Bryan Ave., Lamesa, TX, 79331, Medical Arts Home Healthcare, 1512 N. Bryan Ave., Lamesa, TX, 79331 or First Baptist Church TV Ministry Fund, 801 S. 1st St., Lamesa, TX, 79331. To send condolences online, please visit www.branonfuneralhome.com.
