J.A. Buckner, 90, Claimed by Death

Funeral services for Joseph Alexander Buckner, 90, a resident of Hereford since 1902, were held Tuesday afternoon in the Rose Chapel of Gililland Funeral Home with the Rev. H.V. Fields, Grace Gospel Church pastor, officiating.

Mr. Buckner died at 11 a.m. Sunday in Deaf Smith County Hospital after an illness of several years.

He was a carpenter and helped construct most of the early buildings, including the county jail, in Hereford.

Coming to Hereford from Missouri in January of 1902, he helped erect the second brick building in Hereford and worked on the Panhandle Christian College buildings. In 1904 he helped build the jail which is still in use.

He was born in Tennessee on April 23, 1867 and was married to Harriett Foos in March of 1889.

He became a Mason in 1891 and served as high priest of the Hereford Royal Arch Chapter for 15 years. He was a member of Knight Templars and a charter member of Khiva Shrine. He was a member of the Baptist Church.

Survivors include a son, J.J., and a daughter, Mrs. Verdie Cox, both of Hereford; 14 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren and six great-great grandchildren; a sister, Eliza Powell of Springfield, Mo., and two brothers, Louis of Springfield, Mo. and Ira of California.

Funeral arrangements had not been made this afternoon for burial of Mrs. J.A. Buckner, who died Wednesday night at Pampa, where she was visiting her daughter.

Mrs. Buckner was one of the pioneer residents of this area and her death came as a shock to her many friends here.

The body is scheduled to arrive here this afternoon. Funeral arrangements and details will be announced later.
