HEREFORD — Sammie Jefferson Cates, 77, formerly of Hereford, died Tuesday, Dec. 31, 2013, in Amarillo.

Celebration of life services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in Hereford Heritage Funeral Home Chapel of Memories with the Rev. James Peach, pastor of Frio Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will follow in West Park Cemetery. Arrangements are by Hereford Heritage Funeral Home, 411 E. Sixth St., in Hereford.

Sammie was born July 10, 1936, in Cement, Okla., to Grady Jefferson and Hattie Boswell Cates. He married his wife Laurene on July 7, 1957, in Oklahoma. They moved to Hereford in 1957 from Oklahoma.

Sammie moved in with his niece in Amarillo to be cared for until his passing. Sammie was a Baptist by faith. He loved his Lord and family.

He liked having family barbecues and gatherings, pulling jokes on his family and friends, watching the old western movies, and riding and caring for his horses. He loved to farm, tend to his cattle, play dominoes with his family and buddies, hunt and fish. Sammie liked riding four-wheelers and spending time with his grandchildren. "He was just a simple man," said his niece, Deborah.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Laurene, in 2012; two brothers, Jim Cates and Buddy Cates; and two sisters, Dorothy Perez and Hattie Faye Dodson.

Survivors include a daughter, Samatha Cates of Elk City, Okla.; five sisters, Shirley Buck, Minnie Elliott and Geneva Estep, all of Hereford, Mildred Shirey and husband Gene of Grand Prairie and Mary Ann Fivecoats and husband Bill of Boise, Idaho; and three grandchildren, Courtney Ferguson and husband Brian, stationed in Afghanistan with the Army, of Fort Hood, and Laurea Hammer and A.J. Hammer, both of Elk City.

The family suggests memorials be to American Quarter Horse Association, 1600 Quarter Horse Drive, Amarillo, TX 79104; or Cal Farley's Boys Ranch, P.O. Box 1890, Amarillo, TX 79174.
