Services for pioneer resident, C'Ora "Robbie" Cockrell, 88, will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in First Christian Church with the Rev. Mack McCarter, pastor, officiating. Burial will be at West Park Cemetery under direction of Gililland-Watson Funeral Home.

Mrs. Cockrell died Sunday in Woodward, Okla., where she had been visiting her daughter. She was born seventh of eight children in Cleburne, Texas, on March 10, 1894. She attended college in Canyon, and taught school in Johnson County and near Dimmitt before coming to Hereford in 1916.

She taught fifth and sixth graders for three years at Central School. She married Carl Cockrell, of Hereford, on July 10, 1919, and he preceded her in death on July 9, 1942. The Cockrell home was at Lee and Fourth Streets, however, Mrs. Cockrell later made her home on Star Street before moving to King's Manor in 1981.

She was active in civic groups and clubs such as the Business and Professional Women's Organization and Pioneer Study Club, and a volunteer until very recently with the American Red Cross.

At the time of her death, she had been a member of the First Christian Church here for 66 years, where she had served as Sunday school teacher, youth sponsor, a member of the Church Board, and had held various position in the Christian Women's Fellowship.

In addition to being a homemaker and busy volunteer, she worked in the Hereford Community as Head of the Welfare Department during the depression years and as bookkeeper at Consumer's Co-op for 17 years. Following her retirement from Consumer's, she worked as bookkeeper on a part-time basis for 14 years at Troy Moore's Shamrock Oil Company.

Mrs. Cockrell was named Hereford Pioneer of the Year in 1980, an honor which she enjoyed enormously as through the years she had only missed one Pioneer Celebration, when she and her family were living in Spearman operating the Cockrell Dry Good Store.

Because of her interest in the pioneers of Hereford and the growth of the community, she was a strong supporter of the Deaf Smith County Pioneer Museum.

Mrs. Cockrell was preceded in death by a grandson, and her brothers and sisters, including Mrs. Maud France of Hereford. A nephew, Jack France of Hereford, died recently.

Her surviving family includes her two daughters, Mrs. Carl (Betty) Oldham of Woodward, Okla., and Mrs. Gene (Ann) Osburn of Colorado Springs, Colo.; five grandsons; one granddaughter; eight great-grandchildren; and numerous nephews and nieces, including Jeannie Caison of Hereford.

The family has suggested that those desiring to make donations in the memory may contribute to the Christian Women's Fellowship of the First Christian Church or the Pionneer [sic] Museum of Deaf Smith County.
