HEREFORD - R. Paul Coneway, 93, died Sunday, Sept. 6, 2009.

Celebration of life service will be at 2 p.m. Friday in First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Kevin Bushart, pastor, officiating. Burial with Masonic rites by Hereford Masonic Lodge No. 849 and military honors by the Hereford High School Marine Corps JROTC led by retired Maj. Diego Barela will be in West Park Cemetery. Arrangements are by Hereford Heritage Funeral Home.

R. Paul, lifetime Hereford resident, was born in 1916 in Indianapolis to Raymond Paul and Frieda Hazel Hitz Coneway and went home to be with his Lord and his beloved wife, Irene, on Sept. 6, 2009, at his residence with his family at his bedside. He married the love of his life, Irene Willard on Dec. 26, 1938, in LaCrosse, Wis. R. Paul was a World War II veteran of the U. S. Navy, serving his country with pride as a Naval officer. He was, at one time, the oldest active hot air balloon pilot in the United States.

He loved to travel and read and was a historian. He was an accomplished pianist, organist and author. He authored articles for Texas Tech and several books referencing water well activities. He played in the Texas Tech band and on the Texas Tech golf team. He graduated from Texas Tech in 1937 with a B.S. in mechanical engineering. He was a registered professional engineer in Texas. R. Paul was a Scoutmaster for Hereford's Boy Scout Troop 52 for several years. He worked with the Army Corps of Engineers and played a role in helping to build Lake Texoma dam. He was a member of the National Water Well Association, the Texas Water Well Association, a past president of the New Mexico Water Well Association and a co-founder of the Mountain States Water Well Exposition. He was a member of the Valley of Santa Fe Orient of New Mexico Scottish Rite 32nd Degree Mason and the Hereford Masonic Lodge No. 849 AF&AM. He served for several years as the president of the Hereford Jaycees. He was a longtime member of First United Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents an his wife, Irene, on Oct. 8, 2008.

Survivors include three sons, Clint Coneway and wife Greta of Coronado, Calif., Steve Coneway and wife Nan and Tom Coneway and wife Betty. all of Hereford; a sister, Barbara Goodall of Breckenridge; seven grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be to Samaritan Hospice, 426 Main St., Suite E, Hereford, TX 79045; Boy Scout Troop 52 in Hereford; or to King's Manor West Gate Dining Hall.

Mrs. Coneway was born Aug. 9, 1917, in Savannah, Ill., to Frank and Roseanna Willard. She married R. Paul Coneway in La Crosse, Wis.

Survivors include her husband; three sons, Steve Coneway and Tom Coneway, both of Hereford, and Clint Coneway of Coronado, Calif.; seven grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

The family suggest memorials be to First United Methodist Church, 501 N. Main St., Hereford, TX 79045; or Dining Hall, King's Manor Methodist Home Westgate, 400 Ranger Drive, Hereford, TX 79045.
