Soldier From Hereford Killed

HEREFORD, Feb. 19 (Spl.) - Pfc. William S.D. Foster was killed in action on the Western Front Dec. 25, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Otis Foster of Pendleton, Ore., formerly of Hereford, have been notified. They will receive his Purple Heart award. Foster was killed in his first battle engagement, relatives here believe.

Foster Killed In Sinking of Army Transport

Pfc. S.D. Foster, reported as killed on Dec. 25 in the European Theatre, is now revealed to have been one of 248 men killed when an Army Transport enroute from England to a port on the Continent was sunk on Christmas Day.

The news was received from the War Department by young Foster's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Otis Foster of Pendleton, Ore. Five hundred seventeen other men were listed as missing in the transport sinking.

Pvt. Foster, 19 years old, was reared in Hereford and attended Hereford schools, graduating from Hereford High School in 1943 and enlisting in the Army soon after his graduation.

Survivors, besides his parents, include two brothers, Leroy, who is in the Navy, and Duane, who is with his parents in Pendleton, Ore.

Pvt. Foster had visited here in the E.E. Doak home last fall. He had been overseas only a short time.
