Earl Harkins, 78, longtime Easter area farmer died Tuesday, January 24, 2012 at Baptist St. Anthony's Hospice in Amarillo with his family at his bedside. A Memorial Celebration of Life service is scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday, January 27, 2012 at Frio Baptist Church with Rev. James Peach, Pastor officiating with Mr. Billy Jo Wall assisting.

Earl was born July 10, 1933 in Caddo County, Oklahoma to Finley and Nola (Millwee) Harkins. He graduated from Plainview High School in 1951, and was drafted into the US Army in 1953. He returned from the Army in in 1955 and started farming around the Plainview area.

Earl married his sweetheart Carleta Faye Reeves Harkins on June 1, 1958 at the McCoy Baptist Church near Floydada. They moved to the Easter community in 1959 where they began there farming operations. Earl joined the Frio Baptist Church in 1960 and served as a deacon. He became a charter member of the Easter Lions Club in 1965. Earl was a Production Credit Association Board member from 1991 to 2003. He served on the Running Water district of the Soil and Water Conservation from 1971-1981. Earl was dearly loved by his family and a host of many friends and will be dearly missed by all.

Survivors include his wife, Carleta of the home; one son, Russell Harkins and wife Karen of Easter; two daughters, Sandy Lovley and husband Shane of Maine, Terri Short and husband Ray of Lubbock; one sister, Mildred Welch and husband Gene of Friona; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Earl was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Leon Harkins.

The family suggests memorials to Baptist St. Anthony's Hospice, Box 950, Amarillo, Texas 79105, Clowns Under Construction, 106 Redwood, Hereford, Texas 79045 or the Easter Lions Club.
