Charlie Ray Hoover, 86, lifetime Hereford farmer and rancher died Thursday, August 15, 2013 at King's Manor Methodist Home, West Gate, in Hereford.

A Memorial Celebration of Life service is scheduled for 11:00 am, Monday, August 19, 2013 at Hereford Church of the Nazarene. Rev. Bob Huffaker, longtime family friend, and Rev. Ted Taylor, Pastor of Hereford Church of the Nazarene, will officiate. A burial service at 10 AM is scheduled at West Park Cemetery. Services are under the direction of Hereford Heritage Funeral Home, 411 E 6th Street.

Charles was born on May 17, 1927 to Charlie and Ruby Hoover. He was raised in Western Deaf Smith County, Texas. He lived there and in Hereford his entire life except the time spent in the Navy and the years spent acquiring his college degrees from Eastern New Mexico University in 1951. Charles married his best friend and the love of his life, Wanda Williamson on June 5, 1949. He has always been involved in agriculture in his ranching and farming ventures. Charles opened Southwest Feed Yard, was Board President and Manager in 1971 and purchased Champion Feed Yard in 1972. He was very involved with his community as he served in the Lions Club, United Way, President and Officer of the Hereford Chamber of Commerce, Soil Conservation Service Board, Credit Union Board as well as being a WTSU Foundation Trustee. Many people in Hereford would see him running to the YMCA to have a good "work out" and then run home, all by 5 am. He also enjoyed the challenge of helping raise monies to build the new YMCA. Charles served many in the ag industry by his involvement with Texas Cattle Feeders, the Governor's Texas Committee on Agriculture and many others. Charles and Wanda were honored the Citizen of the Year Award for 2013.

Charles was an Honorably Discharged WWII veteran of the US Navy, receiving the WWII Victory Medal. Military funeral honors will be provided by the US Navy Funeral Honor Guard from the US Navy Reserve Center, Amarillo.

Charles walked out his faith. Words were few, but actions were great. He was a man of benevolence and generous to many by lending a working hand and strong arm. Charles loved the Lord Jesus Christ, his wife, his family, and he loved to work. He always said "work is fun". He lived his life by Col. 3:23: "Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as for the Lord and not for man."

Charles is survived by his wife Wanda, 2 daughters, Connie Sublett and husband Jerry of Amarillo, Debbie Davis of Amarillo, 5 grandchildren, Jill Eady of Keller, Jacob Sublett and wife Beth of Lubbock, David Sublett of Dallas, Eric Black and wife Micah of Vega, Erin Love and husband Johnny of Amarillo and 9 great grandchildren.
