Hughes Rites To Be In Hereford

Funeral services for J.A. Hughes, 54, will be conducted at Hereford Methodist church, with the Rev. M.M. Beavers, pastor, officiating, at 3 o'clock this afternoon. Hughes died at his home 1912 Avenue N. of uremic poisoning after five days illness.

The body will be taken to Hereford this morning. Sanders Funeral home is in charge of arrangements here.

Lived Here 15 Years

Hughes had lived in Lubbock for 15 years and was a pioneer of West Texas.

Hughes had served as county judge at Hereford. He had been in the insurance business here. At time of his death, he was acting treasurer and instructor of candidates in the Masonic lodge.

A large number of members of the lodge will go to Hereford to attend funeral services, and the Masonic Lodge there will direct burial. It was said at the lodge hall Hughes had gone to Hereford in 1892.

Survivors include his wife; one son, Newell Hughes of O'Donnell; two daughters, Miss Maurine Hughes, secretary to Jim Reid, city building inspector and Miss Madeline Hughes, teacher at Tovah.

Masons Asked To Meet

All Master Masons have been asked by Guy Casey, worshipful master, to meet at the lodge hall in the Citizens National bank building at 11 o'clock this morning to leave for Hereford to attend funeral services for J.A. Hughes, who died here Tuesday morning.

Although Masons at Hereford will be in charge of burial services, members of the lodge here will participated in rites and will act as pallbearers, Casey said.

Casey asked that all Master Masons attend who possibly can. Hughes was a member of the lodge here and directed most of the burial ceremonies here when the lodge was in charge.

Funeral Service Held Wednesday For Judge Hughes

Funeral services for Jas. A. Hughes, former Deaf Smith County Judge and prominent resident of this area for more than 20 years, were held at 3 o'clock Wednesday afternoon from the First Methodist Church, conducted by Rev. M.M. Beavers, pastor.

Judge Hughes died at his home at Lubbock, Tuesday, Dec. 7, following a lingering illness. He was 55 years, one month and 15 days of age when his death occurred.

Coming here in 1901, shortly after Hereford was founded, Judge Hughes watched the small community grow into one of the outstanding towns on the Plains. His contribution in this growth was also important, for he served six years as County Judge, from 1914 to 1920, and was at all times active in promoting civic interests. He was an active member of the Masonic Lodge while in Hereford and served for two years as superintendent of the Sunday School department of the First Methodist Church, of which he was also a leader and active member.

Scores of friends in this section were saddened to learn of the death of Judge Hughes, who left here in 1922, and included in the group were many old timers who knew and loved him in early days.

In addition to his widow, Judge Hughes is survived by three children; Maurine, Newell and Madeline; his mother, Mrs. G.A. Hughes of Hereford; two brothers, Allen Hughes and Alvin Rice Hughes; five sisters, Mrs. Mattie Knott, Italy, Texas; Mrs. F.A. Millard, of Hereford; Mrs. Joe Baker, Santa Anna, Calif.; Mrs. Ella Yelverton of Artesia, N.M., and Mrs. J.L. Pevley, Hereford. J.O. Newell, Deaf Smith County sheriff is a brother of Mrs. Hughes.

Services at the cemetery were in charge of the Lubbock Masonic Lodge, and the following Masons, who acted as pall bearers took the Masonic work under Judge Hughes: Guy Casey, Louie F. Moore, John W. Broome, E.A. Tipton, H.J. McLellan, Erly Daniels, Durwood Brady and Clyde Everett.

Interment was made in West Park Cemetery.
