Pioneer Builder Is Claimed by Death

Funeral services for John N. Jacobsen Sr., 83, a pioneer resident of Deaf Smith County, were held Saturday afternoon in the First Methodist Church here.

Mr. Jacobsen, a retired blacksmith, died at 12:30 p.m. Thursday in Deaf Smith County Hospital.

He was born at Rapstedt, Denmark, in 1873 and came to Texas in 1898. He moved to this county from Lewisville, Denton County, in 1903.

Mr. Jacobsen opened his blacksmith shop shortly after coming here and ran it until 1935, when his sons took it over.

He continued to work in the shop, though, until 1950.

With a partner, he established the first cotton gin and light plant here in about 1906. They used the same boiler to operate the gin and light plant, ginning cotton in the day time and producing electricity at night.

Mr. Jacobsen was a 50-year member of the Masonic Lodge; a member of the International Order of Odd Fellows and an active member of the Methodist Church.

In addition to his business interests, Mr. Jacobsen held extensive farm lands.

The Rev. Alby Cockrell officiated at the services. Burial was in West Park Cemetery. Gililland Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Surviving are his wife, Viba [sic]; three sons, John and Chris of Hereford and Berry of Canyon and four grandchildren.
