Luz Mendoza, 82, longtime Hereford resident and businessman, died Wednesday, February 19, 2014, at West Way as a result of an auto accident.
A Prayer service will be held at 6:00 pm, Friday, February 21, 2014 at the Good News Church.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at 2:00 pm, Saturday, February 22, 2014, at the Good News Church. Rev. Sam Rando, Pastor of the Genesis Church of Hereford will officiate. He will be assisted by Rev. David Alvarado, Pastor of the Good News Church. Burial will follow in the West Park Cemetery. Services are under the direction of Hereford Heritage Funeral Home, 411 E 6th Street.
Luz was born, October 8, 1931 in Oswell, Texas, to Luz and Josie (Sanchez) Mendoza. The "Love Bug" bit him and he fell in love with his best friend and wife of 62 years, Dolores (Raybal) Mendoza. They were married in Plainview on March 25, 1952. They moved to Hereford in 1978 from Idaho. Luz was the owner / operator of several trucking companies including L & M Trucking Company at the time of his death. He LOVED is Lord and family. Luz was a hardworking man with a BIG heart. He NEVER met a stranger and many times helped those who were in need of his help. Luz loved to have family gatherings and spend time with his family when he could. He liked gambling, bowling, hunting, fishing and watch Old TV shows, especially "Everybody Loves Raymond" and "Bonanza". Luz was a member of the Genesis Church. Luz was a veteran of the US Army. Military honors will be provided by the US Army, Ft. Hood Funeral Honor Guard, Kileen, Texas.
Luz was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, Mary Lou Garcia, 1 brother Jessie Garcia and most recently by his wife, Dolores on December 16, 2013.
Survivors include 1 son, Robert Mendoza of Hereford; 2 daughters, Linda Sue Martinez and husband Ray of Hereford, Gloria Ann Mercer of Amarillo; 2 brothers, Cruz Garcia and wife Oralia of Napa, ID, Robert Mendoza of Meridian, IN; 7 sisters, Martha Ramirez of Paris, TX, Mary Rojas of Bakersfield, CA, Aurora Garcia of Jerome, ID, Irma Hernandez and husband Richard of Lubbock, TX, Janie Benitez and husband Joey of Twin Falls, ID, Carmen Rojas of Jerome, ID, Esther Walker and husband Don of Hereford; 9 grandchildren, 35 great grandchildren, 14 great-great grandchildren and a longtime "dear" family friend and mechanic for Luz, Joe Topolski of Hereford.
The family suggests memorials to the Genesis Church, 3885 US Hwy 385, Hereford, Texas, 79045 or Good News Church, 621 E. 15th Street, Hereford, Texas, 79045.
