Funeral services for Geroge L. Muse, 80 who had made his home in Deaf Smith County since 1892, are scheduled for 2:30 o'clock this afternoon in the First Christian Church. Rev. Don Root, pastor, and Rev. Russell Wingert, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, will officiate.

Mr. Muse died Wednesday morning in Deaf Smith County Hospital, following a heart attack Tuesday night. Gililland Funeral Home has charge of the arrangements.

Pallbearers will be Frank Cogdell, Jim White, Troyce Carmichael, A.J. Schroeter, Jim Bob Allison and Altus Higgins.

Starting out as a homesteader and cattle feeder, Mr. Muse enlarged his interests until he became a rancher, was president of the First National Bank from 1917 until 1938; and was head of the National Farm Loan Association in Hereford from 1938 until 1950, when he retired.

In addition to these activities, Mr. Muse was one of the first Masons in Hereford, joining the lodge here in 1906. He was also a Shriner, and member of the Knights Templar.

Mr. Muse also served as a county commissioner at one time, and was a member of the first hospital board ever formed in the county.

Born Dec. 4, 1873 in Jackson, La., Muse had moved to Hillsboro with his family while still young, and came to Deaf Smith County from Hillsboro, traveling with two other young men, arriving here on July 3, 1892.

"We met lots of folks going the other way," Mr. Muse recalled when questioned about the trip. "I located 16 miles northeast of Hereford on what is not the Conkwright Ranch. I got together a little bunch of cattle and raised feed for them but didn't market any feed. I hauled lumber from Amarillo for a half dugout, and we had to get our mail in Amarillo about once a month.

"We had little coal, most of the fuel used was cow chips. But people kept coming, and while some of them starved out and went back enough people stayed to develop the country."

Mr. Muse did some school teaching during those early days. His mother and step-father moved to Deaf Smith County, and his step-father was elected county judge. At that time the county seat was at LaPlata, and Mr. Muse helped to build the courthouse.

He married Ottie Oglesby on July 13, 1913 in Mineral Wells, and the couple came back to Deaf Smith to make their home.

Survivors include Mrs. Muse; one son, George Keller Muse; and two grandchildren.
