*Obituary Nancy Melcina Droke Patton
Mrs. W.H. Pattton [sic], well-known Hereford citizen, passed away at her home in Hereford Tuesday, January 7, at 11 o'clock, following an illness of four and one-half months duration. The end came peacefully in the quiet mercy of unconsciousness. All of her children except a son, Fred, whose home is in Chicago, were at her bedside at the time of her passing, as was a sister, Mrs. Sally Garner, of Mineral Wells, who came Tuesday. Fred arrived this morning to be present at the final services.

Mrs. Patton was a woman of strong character and warm friendships. After her husband's death in 1904, she operated a table-board service in her home that was spoken of as "The friendly eating place". The remark of one of these former table guests since her passing is typical: "We were her friends, not just boarders."

Funeral services were conducted this afternoon from the Methodist church of which she was a member, the pastor, Rev. T.C. Willett, officiating. Interment was in West Park Cemetery.

Active pall bearers were Mrs. Patton's grandsons, Charles Newell, L.A. Ricketts, Rayford Ricketts, Gaylord Newell, Orland Newell and Billie Patton.

Mrs. Patton's maiden name was Nancy Melzina [sic] Droke. She was born in Springfield, Missouri, January 21, 1867. Her parents were John and Eliza Baker Droke. When she was quite small, her parents moved to Arkansas and to Texas when she was six years of age. They lived at Eunis [sic] a short time, later moving to Breckenridge where she grew to womanhood, and was married November 12, 1885. She came with her husband to the Panhandle in 1896, living for a year on a ranch northeast of Plainview. The following years they moved to Plainview, and to Hereford in June, 1900.

The children who survive are Mrs. Ida Ricketts and Mrs. Orville Newell, of Hereford; Mrs. W.J. Todd, of Canadian; Mrs. W.A. Trotti, of Fort Worth; John, of the Plains Insurance Co. of Hereford; Fred of Chicago, who arrived this morning to attend the funeral. A daughter, Velma, died in 1909. There are also ten grandchildren and six great grandchildren, all of whom live in Hereford. Other survivors are two brothers, George Droke, of Houston, and Will Droke, of Pritchett, Colorado; three sisters, Mrs. Annie Parker of Branson, Colorado; Mrs. Mary Ewing of Farmington, New Mexico; Mrs. Sally Garner of Mineral Wells, and a half-sister, Mrs. Norene Davis of Roswell, New Mexico, who was here for the funeral.
