J.B. Phillips Dies at Home North of Town Last Friday

John Breckenridge Phillips, honored pioneer of Deaf Smith County, passed away at his home north of Hereford Friday evening, March 24, at the age of 75 years, 11 months and 22 days. Funeral services were conducted in the Methodist church Saturday afternoon at 4:00 o'clock, and he was laid to rest in West Park Cemetery.

Mr. Phillips was born in Barry County, Missouri, April 2, 1857. He was married September 4, 1890, to Miss Emma E. Holloway, who survives him. Some years after their marrige [sic], Mr. and Mrs. Phillips moved to Hereford and have since then made their home here.

About three years ago a paralytic stroke rendered Mr. Phillips an invalid, and the constant care of his loving wife and many friends cared for him through his affliction until his death.

He was a member of the Methodist Church and was a consistant [sic] and faithful member, attending regularity, until illness prevented his being present.

They had no children of their own, but an adopted daughter, Cassie, now Mrs. H.F. Lambert, who also survives him to love and honor her foster parents.

If true greatness lies in consciousness for an honest purpose in life, then Mr. Phillips lived greatly. He was a Christian, and the true Christian is the highest type of man on earth.

In this strange, wonderful thing callef [sic] Life, every man, every woman, has his or her place. Some lay their life work down early; others at noon, and still others in the late evening. This man fell just when his sun was on the distant western horizon.

Man proposes, and God disposes. Plans are made, but they are not always for the best, and a wise Providence frequently over-rules them. Men wonder why, but that is not for them to know - it is enough to know there is a God supreme, and all should be submissive to His will.

With a beautiful patience, Mr. Phillips bowed reverently to His decree. He said: "I am ready to go."

Mrs. Phillips ministered unto him as a mother would care for her child. His friends were true, they never left him.

A life without reproach is better a thousand times than a life whose record simply means millions in money, or high reknown [sic], or authority among men. Mr. Phillips was a friend to all, an enemy to none. He has entered his eternal rest, and his works will follow him here on earth.

"Isle of the evening skies, a cloud visioned land,
Wherein the good meet in the heavenly fold
And drink of endless joys at God's right hand.
Can we forget departed friends? Ah, no!
Within our hearts this memory buried lies;
The thought that where they are, we, too, shall go.
Will cast a light o'er darkest scenes of woe."
