Funeral services for C.A. Skelton, 51, pioneer resident and prominent business man of this community were held Wednesday afternoon at 4 o'clock from the First Methodist Church, conducted by Rev. M.M. Beavers, pastor, assisted by Rev. H.M. Redford, pastor of the First Christian Church.

Mr. Skelton died Tuesday afternoon, Feb. 14, at 2:30 o'clock, following an illness of 10 days as the result of a pneumonia attack.

The church was filled to capacity and rows of persons had to stand around the walls as Mr. Skelton's friends and associates gathered to pay final tribute to him. Flowers banker [sic] the altar and surrounding area in testimony of the high regard in which he was held by individuals, clubs and organizations.

Attending the funeral were men and women from all walks of life, many of whom Mr. Skelton had befriended and assisted in times of need. In addition to representation from over this entire community were individuals from Clovis, Amarillo and others [sic] neighboring towns.

Charles Allan Skelton was born in Jacksonville, Texas, on January 21, 1888, and at various times resided in Dalhart, Clovis, Artesia, Farwell and Portales. He came to Hereford in 1911 from Clovis, accepting the position of manager in the R.H. Kemp Lumber Company.

On August 26, 1915, he and Miss Gladys Johnston were married in Amarillo, Texas.

Shortly afterwards, Mr. Skelton resigned his position with the lumber yard to open a variety store of his own. However, in 1920 he took over the J.L. Case agency for this territory and operated it along with duties connected with the variety store. The variety store, which was located at the corner of Main and Fourth Streets, in February, 1936, was sold to Sam Saunders, and since that time Mr. Skelton devoted his entire time to the implement business.

A residence of 28 years in this community gave Mr. Skelton one of the widest acquaintances of any man in this area. He was ever in close contact with rural and town residents and his cheerful nature made him innumerable friends.

Mr. Skelton was an active community worker at all times, and was always interested in local, state and national affairs. He was a member of long standing in the Hereford Masonic Lodge and was a member of the First Methodist Church.

In addition to his widow, Mr. Skelton is survived by two daughters, Mrs. J.B. Garrett of Carlsbad, N.M., and Mrs. Tom Parker of Hereford; a son, Charles Skelton, Jr.; two sisters, Mrs. Oscar Easley and Mrs. W.C. Pittman, both of Hereford; two brothers, J.F. Skelton of Fort Worth and W.C. Skelton of Borger; also several grandchildren.

Pall bearers were O.E. Sherman, C.C. Acker, J.W. Robinson, H.K. Fox, E.D. Fox and J.J. Clark.

Interment was made in West Park Cemetery.

A number of out-of-town friends, relatives and business associated [sic] were here for the funeral, including his brother, Fred Skelton of Fort Worth; Mrs. Will Foraker, a sister of Mrs. Skelton and Mr. Foraker, attended from Fort Scott, Kansas.

The Case Company was represented by Chas. Scales, C.L. Axers, and Claude Keenan, officials of the Amarillo branch office; a number of neighboring dealers and friends also attended.

Mrs. Cornelia Patton, Amarillo district supervisor of WPA, a close friend of Mrs. Skelton, was here, and Fred Oberthier of Clovis was among friends who came for the funeral services.

Funeral services for Mrs. Gladys Skelton Bullard, 60, were held Tuesday morning in the Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Russell Wingert, pastor, officiating.

Mrs. Bullard died at 9:15 p.m. Saturday in Deaf Smith County Hospital. She lived at 701 N. Main.

She was born Jan. 30, 1897 in Bronson, Kan. She came to Hereford in 1913 from Kansas. She was married Aug. 12, 1944 to R.L. Bullard in Clovis, N.M.

Mrs. Bullard was among the early organizers of the Hereford Texas Federal Credit Union. She was an assistant county welfare worker at one time and was a former member of the Business and Professional Women's Club.

Survivors include her husband, R.L., a son, Charles Skelton of Hereford; two daughters, Mrs. Sallie Garrett of Alamogordo, N.M., Mrs. Kathrine Parker of Bakersfield, Calif.; two sisters, Mrs. Ray Barber, of Amarillo and Mrs. Will Foraker of Kansas and 10 grandchildren.

Burial was in West Park Cemetery. Gililland Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
