Judge John P. Slaton Dies at Home Here Early This Morning
Judge John P. Slaton, 80 years old, pioneer citizen and cviic [sic] leader in Hereford and Deaf Smith county, died at his home here at 4:30 o'clock this morning (Thursday).
Judge Slaton became critically ill last niight. He had been in ill health for several years, and for the past year, had been confinced to his home most of the time with a heart ailment.
Funeral arrangements are awaiting the arrival of his only daughter, Mrs. John Parvin, from Fort Worth. Mrs. Parvin is enroute to Hereford this morning.
Judge Slaton had been a resident of Hereford since 1902. A lawyer, he had been in active practice here until four years ago when failing health forced his retirement. He maintained his law offices here, however, until a year ago.
He had been active in civic affairs in Hereford and in the county during all of his life. Judge Slaton served twice as president of the Hereford Chamber of Commerce; and was one of the leaders in promoting the construction of the first county hospital in Hereford.
He is survived by his wife and one daughter; several nieces, nephews and grandchidren [sic].
