HEREFORD - Mary Thomas, 80, died Monday, May 12, 2008, in Dallas.

Celebration of life services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in First Baptist Church with the Rev. Kyle Streun officiating. Burial will be in West Park Cemetery by Parkside Chapel Funeral Home.

Mary Elizabeth Hodges was born Jan. 4, 1928, in Plainview to Tommie and R.A. Hodges and died after a valiant battle with lung cancer for the past nine months.

She graduated from the Demonstration School of the West Texas State Teachers College in Canyon and quickly developed her inherent musical talent. She subsequently received her B.A. degree in music, piano and education from West Texas State University. Ms. Hodges married Wayne E. Thomas in 1947 and they moved to Hereford in 1953. They celebrated 39 years of marriage that lasted until his death in 1986.

Mary's 55-year membership at First Baptist Church was the source of countless blessings for her as she blessed others in many ways, such as pianist, teacher and committee chairperson. In addition to her involvement in the church, she received immense joy from all the friendships cultivated through her numerous bridge clubs and study groups.

A listing of community activities only begins to suggest the high regard in which she was held by people from all walks of life. Known affectionately as "Mary T.," she was one of those people whose first impression was lasting and impactful. Her warmth, authenticity and genuine love of people reaped a bountiful harvest of close friends who enjoyed her company and valued her wisdom.

Mary will be fondly remembered as someone who made a meaningful difference in the community she loved so dearly. Whether emceeing style shows, reinvigorating the Community Concert series, or recently co-chairing a fundraising event for the Hereford Campus of Amarillo College, she was always engaged and engaging.

The family extends its heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Kartik Konduri, Dr. Scott Cheek and the medical staff of Baylor Medical Center in Dallas. Special thanks are also extended to the many caring nurses of Visiting Nurses Association, who exemplified remarkable compassion and tenderness.

She was predeceased by her husband, Wayne E. Thomas, in 1986; and a brother, James W. Hodges of Tulia.

Survivors include two sons, David Thomas of Houston and Trent Thomas and wife Tara of Dallas; a daughter, Shyla High and husband Don of Dallas; and several nephews and cousins.

The family suggests memorials be to Amarillo College Hereford Campus, 241 Ave. H, Hereford, TX 79045; or a favorite charity.
