OBITUARY - from Myers and Smith Funeral Home memorials - 9/12/2013 –

Rev. J. Allan Guthrie, 84, of Coahoma, died Monday, September 09, 2013. The family will receive friends from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM Thursday, September 12, 2013 at Myers & Smith Funeral Home. Graveside services will be held at 10:00 AM Friday at Salem Cemetery with Rev. Matt Miles of Ft. Davis, officiating.

He was born November 7, 1928 in Navasota, Texas to Helen and Shirlie Guthrie. He grew up in Graham. He graduated from Austin College in Sherman and Austin Seminary in Austin. He pastored Presbyterian Churches in San Antonio, San Angelo, Sonora, Gladewater and the 1st Presbyterian Church of Sweetwater until his retirement. He was a member of the 1st Presbyterian Church of Big Spring.

He is survived by his wife: Ethel Guthrie; two sons: John A. Guthrie and wife Nancy and Gil Guthrie and wife Lizanne; three step-sons: Greg Smith and wife Gloria, Brian Smith and Glenn Smith and wife Claire; one sister: Janet Sims and husband Jerry; one niece: Loretta Sims and one nephew: Eddie Sims and wife Cindy; and 13 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his first wife, Margay Woodward Guthrie.

The family suggests memorials to 1st Presbyterian Churches of Big Spring or Coahoma; American Alzheimer's Association or other favorite charity.

Arrangements are by Myers & Smith Funeral Home.
