Roger Avant, 78, of Palestine, formerly of Big Spring, died Friday, August 15, 2014.

Memorial services will be held at 10:00 AM Thursday, August 28, 2014 at the Family Faith Center in Big Spring with Pastor Sam Segundo, officiating.

He was born July 3, 1936 in Lamesa, Texas and married Oma Pennington October 3, 1954 in Lamesa, Texas.

Roger owned Kwikie Grocery which he opened in 1960 and operated until 2013 when he retired.

He was blessed and enjoyed his five sons, Don Avant and wife, Sherri, Dale Avant and wife, Karon, Dean Avant, Danny Avant ,all of Big Spring, and Devin Avant and wife, Brenda of Lamesa; daughter, Cynthia Reeves of Ft. Worth; and eight grandchildren, John Avant, Kim Avant, Evan Avant, Tyler Avant, Nathan Avant, Kayla Avant, Sara Goath, and Michael Reeves.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Oma Avant; his parents, Reginald and Lola Greer Avant; and a brother, Lynn Avant.

The family suggests memorials to the West Texas Dialysis Center, 501 Birdwell Lane #10, Big Spring, Texas 79720.

Published in the Midland Reporter-Telegraph, Midland, TX, 30 Jan 2002.

Joy was the daughter of Odes Lee Pennington and Mattie Armour Booth. She married James Roger Avant on 6 Jun 1954 (alternate date 3 Oct 1954) at Lamesa, Dawson County, Texas. Joy and Roger had the following children: James Don, Cynthia Ann, Roger Dale, Allen Dean, Danny Lynn, and Devin Lee.

Joy's obit notes that she was a member of First Church of the Nazarene.

Joy, who lived in Big Springs, died at age 62 at a hospital in Big Spring, Texas.

The obit list the following survivors: her husband; all of her children; one brother, Bennie Pennington of Welch; one sister, Shirley Kingsley of California; and eight grandchildren.

Services were held at the Nalley-Pickle & Welch Rosewood Chapel with the Rev. V.E. "Buddy" Leach officiating. Interment followed at Trinity Memorial Park.
