*Obituary Joe Thomas Swinney
Joe Thomas Swinney, 81, of Rising Star, formerly of Coahoma, died Saturday, August 24, 2013 in Sugar Land, Texas. The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM until 7:00 PM Monday, August 26, 2013 at Myers & Smith Funeral Home. Graveside services will be at 10:00 AM Tuesday at Coahoma Cemetery.

He was born December 30, 1931 in Bailey, Texas to Eula (Freemon) and Jeff Swinney. He married Melva Jean Allen on September 1, 1951 in Big Spring, Texas. He was an electrician by trade. He served as the Mayor of Coahoma and Mayor of Rising Star. He enjoyed fishing and sports and was a long supporter of Medina Children's Home. He was a member of the Church of Christ.

He is survived by his wife Melva Swinney of Rising Star; two sons: Dean Swinney and wife Jackie of Kerrville and their daughters Brenn Swinney and M'Lyn Swinney and John Swinney and wife Rachael of Sugar Land and their daughters Kaitlyn Swinney and Paige Swinney; grandsons: Jeremy Jensen of Killeen and Rian Jensen of Colorado City; granddaughter: Carissa Hughes of Sand Springs; brothers: Ray Swinney of Las Cruces, NM and Donald Swinney of Abilene and one sister: Elaine Mount of Lubbock.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter Marlene Riffe and two brothers: Howard Swinney and Eddie Swinney.

Melva Jean Swinney (Allen), 87, of Big Spring, formerly of Coahoma, died at 5:09 am on January 27, 2021 in Big Spring, Texas.

The family will have a graveside service on Saturday, January 30, 2021 at 10:00 am at the Coahoma Cemetery.

Melva was born December 28, 1933 in Lubbock, Texas to Alton and Eula Mae Allen.

She married Joe Thomas Swinney on September 1, 1951 in Big Spring, Texas.

She spent her life as a homemaker, enjoying spending time with her kids and grandkids.

She was a long-time supporter of Medina Children’s Home.

Melva was a member of the Church of Christ.

She is survived by her two sons: Dean Swinney of Justin, TX and his daughters Brenn Berend and husband Beau Berend of Fulshear, TX and M’Lyn Swinney of Stephenville, TX and John Swinney and wife Rachael of Richmond, TX and their daughters Kaitlyn Swinney and husband Brandon Gordon of Minneapolis, MN and Paige Swinney of Sacramento, CA; grandsons: Jeremy Jensen of Harker Heights, TX and Rian Jensen and wife Jodi of Colorado City, TX; granddaughter: Carissa Hughes and husband Keaton of Sand Springs, TX as well as five great grandchildren.

Melva was preceded in death by her husband Joe Swinney; her parents Alton and Eula Mae Allen; one daughter, Marlene Riffe and one brother, Donald Allen and his wife Pat Allen (Kiser).
