*Obituary Betty J. Burkett Luck
Betty Jane Burkett Luck, 79, passed away at St. David's South Austin Hospital on Saturday, September 26, 2009.

Betty was born October 29, 1929, in Andrews, Texas, the fourth child of five, born to Edgar Wesley Burkett and Maggie Tyner Burkett.

She lived all but the last two and one-half years of her life in Andrews where she was active in the community and Means Memorial UMC. Her father died when Betty was a teenager in 1944; a sister died before she was born in 1926; her mother died in 1991 at the age of 98; her brother Charlie died in 1997; and her sister Sue died in 2007. All members of her nuclear family were well-known in Andrews.

Betty attended Andrews' public schools, helped her parents with their duties in the Post Office, and in 1946, married Bill G. Luck, recently discharged from the U.S. Army. Bill died in January of 1996 nine months short of their 50th Wedding Anniversary.

Having grown up around the Post Office (both her father and her mother served as Post Master between 1933 and 1957), Betty sorted mail behind the scenes as a substitute clerk in the 1950s and then greeted the public at the front counter from the 1960s until her retirement in 1984. She worked in three separate building that served Andrews as the Post Office.

She and Bill built their Dream House on Pheasant Lane in 1986, grew and sold pecans, and traveled around the United States for several years. Betty loved to play Bridge, but gave up the game about three years ago. She was a member of the Ocatillo Garden Club, Amoco Annuitants Association, and Friends of the Library until her later years. During her lifetime, she was faithful in service to WSCS (now the UMW), Sunday School, and various committees and projects at Means Methodist. Along with her mother and two sisters, she was known as a good cook and loved to share recipes.

Survivors include her sister and brother-in-law, Jean and Allen Humphries of Midland; sisters-in-law Pat Burkett of Andrews and Joyce Luck of Midland; daughters Linda Wilson and husband Harold of Odessa, Nancy Ham of Midland, and Terri Cox and fiancé Mike Wilson of Buda; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, and grand-nephews.
