UMBARGER — Elsie Friemel Batenhorst, 94, of Umbarger died Monday, June 17, 2013, in Amarillo. Rosary will be said at 7 p.m. today in Brooks Chapel. Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday in St. Mary's Catholic Church in Umbarger with the Rev. Daniel Dreher officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery. Arrangements are by Brooks Funeral Directors of Canyon.
Elsie was born March 26, 1919, in Umbarger to Clem and Anna Skypala Friemel. She married Sylvester Batenhorst on Nov. 11, 1941. He preceded her in death on Sept. 14, 1998. She was a homemaker and an avid quilter. She also enjoyed crocheting, embroidering, gardening and will be greatly missed for her famous homemade bread. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Altar Society, Christian Mothers and Umbarger Senior Citizens. She was a well known historian for St. Mary's Catholic Church and enjoyed giving tours of the church. She was secretary for the Baseball Association for many years and "Matriarch of Umbarger."
She also was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Alvin and Vincent Friemel; and a sister, Marie Weaver.
Survivors include four sons, Marvin Batenhorst of Hartley, Leon Batenhorst of Clarendon, Ralph Batenhorst of Stinnett and Paul Batenhorst of Canyon; three daughters, Irene Unger of Amarillo, Patricia Adrian of Exton, Pa., and Jane Coffelt of Canyon; 16 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
