Michael M. O’Brien gave his life in the service of his country May 1 at Quang Tri, his mother, Mrs. Betty Z. O'Brien learned Monday morning.
U.S. Marine representatives from Midland came here to advise Mrs. O'Brien that her son had been killed as a result of fragment wounds to the neck from hostile mortar fire, while engaged in action against a hostile force in Vietnam.
The body was at Don Ha awaiting transportation to Da Nang from where it will be returned to the United States. Arrangements are pending.
The young Marine was born here Feb. 23, 1949, to Mrs. O'Brien and the Late Mr. M. J. O'Brien. He attended high school at Forsan and enlisted in the U.S. Marines May 10, 1967. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Big Spring.
O'Brien was assigned to Company M. 3rd Battalion, Third Marines of the 3rd Marine Division.
Surviving are his mother, Mrs. Betty O'Brien a sister, Patricia O'Brien; a brother, John K. O'Brien.
His grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. W. Ernest O'Brien, Big Spring, and Mrs. Edith Atkins, Salinas, Kan.
