Interment will follow at Trinity Memorial Park in Big Spring.
Jerry was born December 12, 1933 in Big Spring and graduated from Big Spring High School in 1952. He went on to attend Texas Tech University to pursue a degree in Mechanical Engineering and graduated in 1957 and soon accepted a job with Boeing in Wichita, Kansas. On September 3, 1960, he married his sweetheart, Dorothy Baker, of Ackerly, Texas. In 1961, they moved to Abilene, Texas for Jerry to begin a job with the Corp of Engineers to work on completing the Atlas missile sites until they were turned over to the Air Force in 1962. Their daughter, Sherri, was born in 1962 and shortly thereafter they moved to Irving, Texas where Jerry began working at LTV specializing in hydraulic systems design for aircraft. He was instrumental in working with the team that designed an experimental aircraft to investigate the operational suitability of vertical/short takeoff and landing (V/STOL) transports. Their son, Kelly, was born in 1965 in Irving, Texas. Jerry continued to work at LTV until his father, WJ Rogers, died in 1974 and Jerry and Dorothy made the decision at that time to move back to Big Spring to return to the family farm being the 3rd generation of the Rogers Family Farm, started by his grandparents, J. Thomas and Pearl Rogers. He continued to farm for 26 years and retired in 2000. In retirement, Jerry and Dorothy spent time traveling and visiting with friends and family and Jerry engaged in his various hobbies and interests. Jerry and Dorothy moved to Albuquerque, NM in August 2016 to assisted living where they could be close to their son, Kelly and daughter-in-law, Renee.
Jerry was an honorable man who had friends near and far. He had many personal interests and talents such as benchrest rifle shooting, trap shooting, radio control airplanes, woodworking, and working Sudoku puzzles. His adventures provided many unique experiences for his children growing up traveling across the country. He took immense pleasure in volunteering his time and gun-smithing skills to the Howard County 4-H Shooting Club for youth learning the sport and was honored with a special “Friend of 4-H” award. He served on the Board of Directors of the Farmers Home Administration in Stanton and also greatly enjoyed his time spent serving on the Board of Directors for the State National Bank.
Jerry’s devotion to his family was always on the forefront of his mind throughout his life. He was a loving husband, caring and guiding father, and a very proud grandfather. He had a love for animals which was evident from a young age with raising award-winning steers and always having pets. He loved his pets and will be missed by their cat, Molly B. He also loved his grand-dogs and cats.
Jerry was a member of the Prairie View Baptist Church. He accepted Jesus as his Lord and Savior at Sherwood Baptist Church in Abilene, Texas.
Jerry is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Dorothy Rogers; son, Kelly Rogers and daughter-in-law, Renee of Albuquerque, NM; daughter, Sherri Rogers Gonzalez of San Marcos, TX; grandsons, Ian Gonzalez of Dallas, TX and Adam Gonzalez and wife, Anne of Sugar Land, TX; brother, Duane Rogers and sister-in-law, Dona, of Godley, TX; several cousins, nieces and nephews.
