It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved grandfather, Ewing Boyd "Jack" Thorpe Jr., who passed away on October 12, 2023. He was 90 years old and had lived in Lampasas, Tx, for the past 12 years.
Born on February 27th, 1933, in Wink Tx. Jack was the son of Ewing Boyd Thorpe and Robbie Ethel Corder Thorpe.
He grew up in Big Spring, Tx, attended Forsan High School, and graduated in 1950.
Following high school, he attended Texas A&M University before enlisting in the US Army. Jack proudly served 7 years in the Army as a US Army Ranger and Paratrooper. He fought in the Korean War and served 5 additional years in the National Guard following his service.
Jack is preceded in death by his wife, Lillian Margaret Clark Thorpe, two sons, Gordon Earl Morris and Kenneth Ewing Thorpe, and three grandchild, Michele Hodnett, Jay Hensley, Dexter Morris.
He is survived by two daughters, Carol Speaker and Susan Harvey; 7 grandchildren – Sue Ann McAfee, Bo Hodnett, Nicole Hodnett Roe, Michael Hensley, Justin Thorpe, Desiree Thorpe, and Arial Beck, and many great-grandchildren.
Jack was a devoted family man and a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and great-great grandfather.
He loved being married to Lynn for nearly 60 Years. Together they had 4 children, 8 grandchildren, and many great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren, all of whom he loved dearly.
He enjoyed spending time with his family and will be remembered for his sense of humor, generosity, and his contagious smile.
Jack owned and operated Jack Thorpe Construction for 25 years and was responsible for dozens of commercial buildings and hundreds of custom homes in Big Spring. He was voted Best Custom Home Builder in Big Spring for 5 years in a row. After a slowdown in construction, Jack worked as the Vice President of 1st Savings and Loan for 7 years. After that, he sold new cars for Bob Brock Ford for over 15 years.
Jack was a 32nd degree Master Mason as well as a member of the Suez Temple Shriners in San Angelo.
In his free time, Jack loved to fish and would often be found in his garden tending to his plants or watching his favorite team play on TV.
A private funeral service will be held at 2:00 on October 18th at Myers & Smith Funeral home. Family and friends are welcome to attend the service to pay their final respects.
Jack will be deeply missed by all who knew him, but his memory will live on through his children and grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers Jack would like donations to the Lynn Thorpe Endowed Scholarship fund at Howard College.
