Orville Clyde Shapland, 93, of Midland, formerly of Big Spring, died on Friday, May 28, 2010, in a Midland hospital. No services are planned.
He was born on September 30, 1916, in Plains, Kansas and married Phyllis Wyatt on September 7, 1940 in Liberal, Kansas. She preceded him in death on November 22, 1993.Orville graduated from the University of Kansas with a Bachelors degree in Business Administration and then served his country in the United States Army during WWII under General Patton. In 1946 he moved to Midland and then to Big Spring in 1953. That year he developed and opened Trinity Memorial Park and operated the cemetery until his retirement. Orville served as the chairman of the board for Cantebury Retirement Homes in Big Spring for a number of years, operated La Vida Trailerminiuim in Ruidoso, NM and also built Monolithic Dome Houses in Capitan, NM. He was an avid pilot, was always active and loved life. He was an Episcopalian.
Survivors include one son, Bob Shapland of Pisgah Forest, North Carolina; one daughter, Patty Prehiem of Capitan, New Mexico; and partner Betty Barnes of Midland.
