LAMESA - Lum J. Holder, 93 of Lamesa, died, March 7, 2014. A grave side service will be held Monday, March 10, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at Lamesa Memorial Park with Bro. Daniel Armstrong officiating. Arrangements are by Branon Funeral Home. Visitation will be held Sunday, March 9, 2014 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Branon Funeral Home.

Mr. Holder was born on March 14, 1920, in Gordonville, Grayson County, Texas to Robert Lee and Minnie Blanche (Eagle) Holder. They moved to Dawson County in 1926 and lived in the Sparenberg Community.

He married Della Wood on May 23, 1948 in Lamesa. Together they raised two sons. Mr. Holder was a lifelong Dawson County cotton farmer and longtime member of the First United Methodist Church in Lamesa where he studied with the Men's Bible Class. He was inducted into the United States Army on December 5, 1941 and proudly served his country during World War II. He was honorably discharged as a Tech Sergeant with Battery D of the 601st AAA Gun Battalion. In May 1944 his battalion was first to shoot down a German V-1 while positioned near Folkestone, England. Late June 1944 through September they were positioned south of Omaha Beach protecting the Allies beachhead from enemy aircraft. From November 1944 to April 1945 his unit was attached to the 9th AAF's Antwerp X Command and located 60 miles south of Antwerp, Belgium defending the city and port from German V-1 attacks. He was honorably discharged on December 3, 1945.

Survivors include two sons, Thomas of Lamesa, and Holly and his wife, Dee Ann of Lubbock; two granddaughters, Lane Pender and her husband, Alan of Dallas, Leigh Holder of Dallas, Texas; and a step grandson Bryan Nowlin and his wife Kortni of Lamesa.

Mr. Holder was preceded in death by his parents and wife Della of Lamesa; a brother Ritter Holder of Lovington, NM; three sisters, Margaret Bradford and Pat Sims both of Lovington, NM and Adren Nix of Midland, TX. The family suggests donations be made in the name of Lum Holder to the First United Methodist Church of Lamesa, Building Fund, P.O. Box 438, Lamesa, TX, 79331.
